DIVERSITY, Equity & INCLUSION

From the indigenous people of this valley, to the pioneers who made Salt Lake City the "Crossroads of the West," to welcoming the world during the 2002 Winter Olympics, our City has established itself as a gathering place. As an openly gay, sixth-generation Utahn with pioneer heritage, Chris is dedicated to promoting our Capitol City as a model for diversity, equity, and inclusion for all residents.

  • Before joining the Council, Chris helped establish Utah’s first all-inclusive anti-discrimination ordinance for housing and employment, which continues to motivate his efforts to expand diversity and inclusion efforts.

  • In his first year on the Council, Chris secured funding for the “Buddy Benches” program at all Salt Lake City schools, which shines a light on bullying and promotes inclusivity.

  • Chris championed funding for a full-time census coordinator to ensure all Salt Lake City residents were counted, regardless of language barriers, immigration status, or LGBTQ status.

  • In 2019, Chris helped secure funding for free feminine hygiene products in all City facilities.

  • As Council Chair in 2020, Chris helped create the Racial Equity in Policing Commission to help identify and root out systemic inequity in public safety and expand access to justice.

  • Chris has sponsored formal recognition of Salt Lake City’s indigenous people, transgender residents, victims of hate crimes, residents with HIV/AIDS, Asian American & Pacific Islanders, and Juneteenth celebrations.
